IB Core concepts
This section examines the origins, nature, challenges and achievements of civil rights and social movements after 1945. Causes of some of these movements may be pre-1945. These movements represented the attempts to achieve equality for groups that were not recognized or accepted as full members of society, and they challenged established authority and attitudes.

Indigenous groups and leaders in Latin americaWe had to explore each of the 10 “Indigenous Rights Warriors You Need to Know”. We had to search the leaders of indigenous movements in Latin America and identify the context of the struggle for indigenous rights by highlighting their origin, types of discrimination, the challenges they faced and their individual achievement.

AMERICAN INDIGENOUS RIGHTSWe had to analyse and annotate an article about the key features of the American Indigenous Rights. We had to identity (by highlighting with different colors) the origins of the American indigenous civil rights movement, the nature of discrimination against American indians, the challenges faced by groups of indigenous peoples in the US, the achievements of indigenous groups or individuals in the US.

Canadian Cultural genocideWe had to analyse an article that argued that the Canadian government committed a cultural genocide against indigenous people. We identified the article's claims and evidences, judging if they were blunt or not.

American Feminism:

Waves of feminism: Letter to Friedan
We had to read through the History and Theory of Feminism article and take notes comparing and contrast the three waves of feminism. After, we were given a variety of topics (including French Feminism, Socialist and Marxist, Radical, Black, Postcolonial and Third World, Libertarian, Poststructural and Postmodern, Environmental) to choose from and analyze its key features and what ways society is meeting its demands. Then, we watched a Ted Talk entitled “We Should All Be Feminists” by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie a Nigerian feminist, which we were also required to take notes. Lastly, we wrapped everything together by writing a fictional letter to Betty Friedan explaining our views on the Feminist movement and its main features, as well as what we envision a Fourth Wave of feminism would look like.

What Caused the zoot Suit Riots?Two articles with conflicting points of view were read, because while one blamed the Americans for the wave of violence, the other argued that the Mexicans were guilty for it. We analysed each articles' evidences in order to make our own opinion about this fact.

Cesar ChavezWe learned about Cesar Chavez, a Mexican who fought for the rural workers' rights. Using the evidences provided by an article about him, we discussed if he was really essential to the rural workers' rights movement or not.
